Climbing The Mount< The Return To Winter Wonderland | Blog | Snow Go > At the end of December, I went for a walk in Guildford with my friend Gabriella. We went to visit a place called The Mount. It’s a high hill, overlooking the town centre. I had not climbed up The Mount since I was a young boy. I used to think it was a mountain when I was very small. Its a popular place for children to go sledging in Wintertime when we have snow, as its a nice big steep hill, its ideal.
Some people also like to fly their radio controlled aeroplanes from The Mount in Summertime. Check out the below video, which was filmed from a radio controlled aeroplane whilst flying over The Mount.
Its fairly steep to walk up the hill, as you can see from this funny video of a moped trying to get up it!
We walked along the road leading up the hill to The Mount passing some nice houses along the way, and we reached Mount Cemetery. Mount Cemetery is a very old graveyard with a small Church.
It was interesting walking around it, looking at the old gravestones.
A number of famous historical people are buried at the cemetery. They include Lewis Carroll, who was the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Edward Carpenter, a socialist poet and activist.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland used to be one of my favourite stories as a child. I drew Alice and the other characters from the book in a GCSE Art school project, which you can view here. There are a couple of Alice statues in Guildford, one is along the River Wey with her sitting by the river reading and the White Rabbit disappearing down a rabbit hole. The other one has Alice going through the looking glass, and it is located within the Guildford Castle Grounds, behind the house where Lewis Carroll once lived. After we finished walking round the graveyard, we walked further up the hill towards The Mount. We passed some more nice houses, and then I saw the entrance to The Mount, which was a small opening into large open area with grassland. It was a great view of Guildford from the top of The Mount, we could see the Guildford Cathedral, plus other buildings we recognised within the town centre. We sat together on a bench, and we waited for dusk to arrive. The lights of the many buildings and streets in Guildford began to turn on, as it got darker. It was a very nice moment to be on top of the hill. I took some pictures of the changing scene on my mobile.
It was then time to leave The Mount before it got too dark. We walked down The Mount from the top of the hill to the bottom of it. The hill was quite slippery on the grass and very steep. I had the urge to run down the hill, but Gabriella was holding on to my arm and had boots on, so she couldn’t run with me. At the bottom of the hill, we were on the other side of it, so we walked back to the town centre from a different way than from where we came from. It was a very nice walk we had together that evening. Sometimes doing free and the most simplest of things are the most pleasurable in life. Related ContentComments on Climbing The Mount2
Guildford is a nice place with lots of interesting history. I'm glad that I recently bought a flat there and that I'm returning back to my home town to live.
